Five people had to be rescued from the sea off the Hampshire coast after their dinghy capsized.

Coastguards were called at 0810 BST following reports of people in the water at the entrance to Langstone Harbour near Eastney.

The Portsmouth inshore lifeboat rescued three men and two women who did not have life jackets.

They were taken to Portsmouth lifeboat station by the RNLI where they were given first aid by coastguard officers.

Veronica Taylor, of the Solent Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre, said: "This stretch of water can be particularly hazardous due to the strong currents flowing out of the harbour with an outgoing tide.

"The casualties were fortunate that they were rescued so quickly.

"We urge members of the public whenever they take to the water to be prepared and to always be wearing their life jackets."
