Forget gender reveals, parents-to-be are going wild for ultrasound cakes
There’s a new celebration cake you need to know about (Picture: Cake Box/Charlie Bard Photography/I Make You Hungry) Cake has long been a staple at celebrations, with the dessert featuring at birthday parties, weddings, and graduations. In recent years, it’s become increasingly common to celebrate a pregnancy with a gender reveal cake, too.
The sweet treat is used to announce an unborn baby’s gender, appearing neutral on the outside, with either pink or blue sponge inside. But according to high street cake business Cake Box, a different type of bake is rising in popularity with parents-to-be, and it’s known as an ultrasound cake. What is an ultrasound cake? An ultrasound cake is a celebratory cake that features a pregnancy ultrasound scan image printed on top. Edible printing technology is typically used to create the picture, and there may also be a few other decorative elements. This could include personalised messaging such as the baby’s due date, the name the parents have picked out for the child, or a message like ‘coming soon’.
At Cake Box, some customers have also asked for the cake design to feature clouds, stars, and teddy bears, and a few wanted to include the baby’s heartbeat. Why are people ordering them? The egg-free bakery brand with more than 300 locations across the UK has revealed it’s seen a ‘surge in demand’ for these types of cakes over the past year. Sukh Chamdal, CEO of Cake Box, told Metro: ‘Customers are increasingly looking for cakes that mark important life moments, and pregnancy milestones have become one of those occasions.
‘For many parents, the first scan is one of the most emotional and memorable moments of a pregnancy, and the cake becomes a way to celebrate that and share the milestone with friends and family. ‘Some customers use ultrasound cakes as pregnancy announcements, while others order them for baby showers or to mark scan appointments.’
He claims that there is a ‘ritual element’ involved with the cakes, similar to gender reveal parties, and some are even combining the two. ‘Families may gather to celebrate the first scan, a 12-week, or 20-week milestone, or a baby shower. ‘In many cases, customers combine the ultrasound design with the gender reveal element.’

Sukh adds that social media platforms have helped to popularise the trend, with parents increasingly sharing their baby news in photos and videos online. And on TikTok, there are dozens of videos showing off ultrasound cakes, some of which have a burn to reveal the design, which reveals the baby’s gender.
