Four men have been arrested after a man was shot and injured in the chest on the outskirts of west Belfast on Friday night.

The 27-year-old man was approached by three to four masked men while walking between Dairy Farm and Twinbrook shortly after 1930 BST.

A number of shots were fired as he attempted to run away. One hit him on the side of the chest.

His condition is described as stable but not life-threatening.

The attack is being treated as attempted murder.

The four men who have been arrested are aged 30,32,38 and 38.

SDLP councillor for the area Brian Heading said he believed dissident republicans were responsible.

He said: "The police are treating this as attempted murder but the rest of us should also treat it as an attempted coup against our democratic rights and system.

"There is a very concerted attempt going in to reinstate the sort of Mafia-style community control that the Provisionals exercised for so many long, hard years here."
