Free meals on wheels could end in Northamptonshire

A charge could be made for free services such as meals on wheels under a review of social care in Northamptonshire.

The county council has set a target of raising an extra £600,000 a year through charging for community-based care services.

The money will be used to fund services for everyone eligible for its support and care, the council said.

It is seeking views on fees for services including transport and meals.

It also wants comments on its charges for services which people are eligible to receive as part of a support package.

The consultation only affects adult non-residential care services such as home care, day care and personal assistance, the council said.

The review does not include residential care such as care homes and respite care in care homes.

Robin Brown, cabinet member for health and adult social services, said more than 120 local authorities charge more than Northamptonshire.

Social care is facing the challenge of a growing and ageing population and an increased life expectancy for younger disabled adults, he added.

"Without raising more money through charging for non-residential social care services, it is likely that we would have to reduce services being offered," he said.

The consultation, which ends on 6 August, is being sent to customers and available on the council's website and at all Northamptonshire libraries and county council day services.
