Getting disability benefits approval expedited
Although most people qualify for Medicare at the age of 65, certain younger people may also qualify after a two-year waiting period if they receive Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
The Compassionate Allowances (CAL) program can help speed up the approval process for SSDI benefits for people with particularly serious or severe conditions.
While the CAL program is not run by Medicare, it can help a person qualify faster for SSDI and, by extension, for Medicare.
The CAL program speeds up access to disability benefits by flagging applications from people living with certain conditions that the Social Security Administration (SSA) automatically recognizes as disabilities.
Eligible conditions include certain advanced cancers, genetic syndromes, brain disorders, and other rare diseases. The list of qualifying conditions is available in full on SSA.gov.
Applicants must still provide documentation of their disability, but if their condition is on the CAL list, the SSA will fast-track the review process of their application.
The CAL program does not require a separate application. A person can generally apply for disability benefits either online or through their local SSA office, and the SSA will evaluate their eligibility through its standard process.
However, applicants should note that their condition qualifies under the CAL program, which should flag their application as CAL eligible.
People should be aware that the CAL program can speed up their approval for SSDI benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI), which are slightly different benefit programs with different eligibility criteria. That said, only the receipt of SSDI benefits allows a person to become eligible for Medicare before age 65 after the required waiting period of 24 months.
In addition, once approved through the CAL program, a person’s financial benefits will be the same as under regular eligibility rules. In 2025, SSI pays $967 per month for individuals and $1,450 for couples, while SSDI payments vary, averaging about $1,500.
The SSA most recently expanded the list of qualifying conditions for the CAL program in 2024. The conditions added were:
In addition, certain adults and children waiting for a heart transplant were deemed eligible.

Although the CAL program can expedite a person’s approval for disability benefits, a person generally has to wait about 5 months before benefits actually begin.
