An eight-year-old girl and a man are fighting for their lives after a car explosion. Three other children are also being treated in hospital after suffering injuries believed to be life-changing following the incident outside the Hare and Hounds Inn on Liley Lane in Mirfield, West Yorkshire.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 2.17pm on Sunday after reports of an explosion involving a vehicle. Police said five people travelling in the car – four children and a 43-year-old man – suffered serious burns. A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: "At 2.17pm yesterday (28 June ), police were called to a report of an explosion in a vehicle at the Hare and Hounds Inn, Liley Lane, Mirfield. Emergency services attended and found that five people in the vehicle – four children and a man – had suffered serious burns. All of them were taken to hospital for treatment. A man aged 43 and a girl aged 8 suffered life-threatening injuries. The three other children have injuries which are believed to be life-changing. Enquiries are ongoing into the incident, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances."

Yorkshire Ambulance Service also attended the incident after receiving the emergency call at 2.17pm on Sunday.

A spokesperson for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said: "We received an emergency call at 2.11pm yesterday to report an explosion in a vehicle on Liley Lane in Mirfield.

"A number of ambulance resources were dispatched to the scene, including four ambulances and the air ambulance, and five patients were conveyed to hospital."

According to YorkshireLive, the explosion was believed to have happened inside a tipper truck and was caused by a "huge gas cannister explosion."

Police enquiries into the cause of the explosion remain ongoing, however.
