A paedophile who told his victim that he would move on to her younger sister if she refused to do what he said has been jailed for three years.

Richard Johnston, 46, admitted sexually abusing the girl over a nine-year-period in Glasgow.

He carried out the offences while babysitting her and her brothers and sisters, between 1988 and 1997.

Johnston also admitted getting into bed with another girl, aged 10, and asking to be her boyfriend.

Glasgow Sheriff Court heard that the abuse began when the first girl was eight and finally stopped when she turned 17.

She did not come forward to report it to police until 2008.

Johnston also told the girl that if her parents were not doing the same things to her then they did not love her.

Sheriff Norman Ritchie told Johnston: "These are extremely serious offences which occurred over a long period of time during which you threatened your young victim."

He placed Johnston on the sex offenders register for five years.

The 46-year-old was also originally charged with a string of other child sex offences but prosecutors accepted his pleas of not guilty to those charges.

Defence lawyer David Kinloch told the court that his client was a "loner" who showed little remorse about what he had done but accepted responsibility.
