Gloucester 10k runners raise thousands for charity

Nearly 1,000 runners have taken part in this year's Gloucester 10k race around the city centre.

Race director Alex May said the event was well-supported with hundreds watching the race.

"We handed out bells to the marshalls to stop their hands hurting from all the clapping," he added.

The race is now in its 14th year, and has raised over £100,000 for charity in that time.

One of the participants this year was the original founder Nigel Tilliot who had never run his own race before because he was too busy organising it previously.

"I'm really proud to have started the event, and it's really strange running it when you know so many people who had set up the course," he said.

"I'm pleased it is still going - when we started we were told we'd never set up a 10k in Gloucester, so it's a really nice thing to be involved in."

The race looped around the city's docks and roads in the centre, as well as the cathedral.

One of the charities the event raises money for is the Hollie Gazzard Trust, set up in memory of 20-year-old Hollie Gazzard, who was murdered at her Gloucester workplace by an ex-partner in 2014.

Race entrant Chris Kirkham said it was a "thrill" to run around the centre of Gloucester.

"It's absolutely awesome, so many supporters out and so many people running, everyone had a great time, and I can't wait to get my bacon sandwich now," he said.

Chris Nicholls from the Severn Athletic Club said the race was his "favourite" one to enter.

"There's lots of iconic landmarks, people give so much support, I've been coming for years and it's such a lovely event," he added.
