Grant to repair Devon's winter potholes

Devon roads damaged by the harsh winter are to benefit from a £3.6m government repair grant.

The Department for Transport awarded Devon County Council (DCC) the grant, one of 35 repair schemes nationwide.

The council said the money would be used to repair about 70 miles of the county's 8,000 miles of highways.

The grant can only be spent on repairing roads damaged in the recent harsh weather and not routes which have been in need of repair for even longer.

DCC Councillor Stuart Hughes said: "While it [the grant] may only help us fix a small percentage of our roads, we are putting the money to good use where it can have the most impact.

"The roads being targeted may not be those that have suffered the most, but this is the best use of this funding to enable us to cost-effectively repair and protect more of our network."

The funding is in addition to DCC's £7m programme of repairs which has filled about 70,000 potholes this year.
