Dartmouth town centre has been sealed off after a fire spread through its historic Fairfax Place.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue initially sent two crews after receiving reports of smoke from a fish and chip shop at about 1325 BST.

However, as the fire spread to adjoining properties, a further eight crews were sent to the scene.

The fire, which began in Higher Street, is reported to have affected eight shops and 15 flats.

Firefighters used an aerial ladder platform and breathing apparatus alongside 11 water jets and pumps to tackle the blaze.

Eyewitness Francesca Johnson called the fire "devastating", saying she was "sad [to see] the fire destroying part of our wonderful old town".

No-one is thought to have been hurt in the fire.
