'Homicide' inquiry after soldier attacked in Newcastle
Detectives have launched a "homicide" investigation into the death of a soldier attacked outside a nightclub.
Staff Sgt Chris Chacksfield, 31, of the 14th Signal Regiment (Electronic Warfare), was assaulted outside the club in Newcastle on 31 May.
The soldier, of Haverfordwest in Pembrokeshire, was taken to hospital but died from head injuries.
A 22-year-old man has appeared before Newcastle magistrates in connection with the incident.
Staff Sgt Chacksfield's 32-year-old wife was with him at the time of the attack and has been released from hospital after treatment.
Northumbria Police said the soldier's death is being treated as a "homicide" investigation.
A 22-year-old man has appeared before Newcastle magistrates facing one charge of grievous bodily harm with intent and one offence of wounding.
A 23-year-old man who was arrested in connection with the incident has been released with no further police action.
