Horror as huge fire erupts in London with black smoke filling sky
A huge fire erupted in London last night and continues to burn this morning as smoke could be seen for miles in the south east of the capital. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) said fifteen fire engines and 100 firefighters are tackling the blaze at a waste facility on Landman Way in Deptford.
Around 50 tonnes of household waste are thought to be on fire, with crews working into the night to bring it under control.
LFB said: "Fifteen fire engines and around 100 firefighters are responding to a fire on Landman Way, Deptford.
"The fire involves around 50 tonnes of household waste stored at a waste facility. This will be a protracted incident, with firefighting operations expected to be taking place through the night. Rail services into London Bridge are impacted as crews work to bring the fire under control.
"The Brigade took the first of over 160 calls reporting the incident at 1959, and crews from East Greenwich, Old Kent Road, Deptford and surrounding fire stations have been sent to the scene. The cause of the fire is not yet known."
National Rail have confirmed that disruption caused by the fire is over.
An update says: "Disruption caused by a fire on a property between London Bridge / Canada Water and New Cross / New Cross Gate has now ended."
Speaking from the scene of the blaze last night, Station Commander Duncan Rees said: "Crews are working hard in difficult conditions to bring the fire under control.
He added: "A large amount of smoke is being produced by the incident. Local residents should keep doors and windows closed where possible."
It is understood that firefighters tackled a blaze in June at the same facility.
According to reports a van and a car were destroyed and one man was treated on scene by London ambulance service.

National Rail have issued an update stating that major disruption is expected until at least 3am.

A train travelling from London Bridge to Sidcup has been standstill for nearly two hours with passengers on board.
The vehicle has no power or toilets, as customers say it is a 'shambles'.
A spokesperson for South Eastern Railway said: "We're hoping to have this train on the move shortly; the fire brigade has sufficiently controlled the fire that we can run on some lines from London Bridge, and we're now awaiting power to be restored."
LFB have confirmed they will be working into the night to control the blaze.
A spokesperson said: "This will be a protracted incident, with firefighting operations expected to be taking place through the night."
National Rail said: "A fire on a property between London Bridge / Canada Water and New Cross / New Cross Gate means all lines are blocked.
"As a result, trains between these stations may be cancelled, severely delayed by up to 100 minutes or revised. Major disruption is expected until the end of the day."
A photo from the scene shared with the Express shows the terrifying view captured by a passenger on a passing train. The blaze has affected a waste facility in Deptford next to a railway line.
All railway lines between London Bridge and New Cross are closed while the fire is dealt with, Network Rail said.
