Horse-drawn carriage from TV show Victoria auctioned for £6,400

A horse-drawn carriage featured in TV drama Victoria has sold for more than £6,000 at auction.

The town coach, used in the historical series starring Jenna Coleman, was one of 26 carriages and carts recently auctioned by Duggleby Stephenson in York.

The auctioneers said the vehicles came from a private collection amassed by North Yorkshire businessman Ian Smith, who lived on a farm in Cropton and died in 2016.

The auction raised more than £200,000 in total, the auctioneers said, and "smashed all pre-sale expectations".

Bidding came in from all over the world, according to Duggleby Stephenson, including potential buyers in Europe, the US and South America.

A Victorian horse-drawn trade cart built in 1895 was the biggest surprise, the auctioneers said, raising £21,000 - despite expectations it would fetch £3,500.

A "roof seat brake" carriage made by Shanks of London, described as "the ultra-wealthy family's transport of choice for a day at the races", hit £33,000.

"It was absolutely epic, one of the best single-owner auctions we've ever seen at our York saleroom," Duggleby Stephenson managing director Will Duggleby said.

"It was a very special collection brought together over a period of about a quarter of a century."
