Horse owners have been warned to take extra security measures after a mare was found stabbed in a field in Surrey.

The animal needed 20 stitches to the wound after the incident in Badshot Farm Lane, Farnham, on Saturday.

"This is a shocking and despicable crime which left this horse with a horrific injury," said Insp Simon Dann.

He said police were working with Horsewatch to alert other horse owners and warn them to take extra care to protect their animals.

In a separate incident, Camberley police are asking for information after two cats were shot with an air rifle, one of them suffering fatal injuries.

The young male cat was found in its owner's garden in Connop Way, Frimley on 17 June.

It is thought it was shot overnight and then made its way back to the house.

The second cat, a female, collapsed when it returned home to Ravenswood Drive, Camberley later the same day. An X-ray showed it had a pellet lodged in its side.

"These were despicable attacks on defenceless animals," said Pc Tina Fitzpatrick.
