Mounjaro pens are categorized as ‘sharps’ because they contain needles and residual medication. Because needles can cause injuries or spread infections, you must dispose of them safely by following these steps:

Immediately after using your Mounjaro pen for the last time, replace the lid and place it into a sharps disposal container. These containers are made of strong, rigid plastic that prevents needles from poking through. You can buy FDA-cleared sharps containers at most pharmacies, medical supply stores, and online.

If you don’t have a sharps container, you can use a heavy-duty plastic container, such as a laundry detergent or bleach bottle. It must be leak-resistant, able to stay upright, and have a tight-fitting, puncture-resistant lid. Label it clearly “hazardous waste”.

Only fill the container to three-quarters full to avoid accidental needlestick injuries when closing it. Before disposal, seal the container with heavy-duty tape.

To find the rules for your specific area, call your local trash service or health department. You can also contact Safe Needle Disposal at 1-800-643-1643 for state-specific information.
