Isle of Man TT road collisions down from 2009

The number of civilian road crashes during the Isle of Man TT festival fell by 13% in 2010.

Police said there was one fatality and 24 collisions resulting in slight injuries - the same as 2009's figures.

However, the number of serious injuries and damage-only crashes fell. In total there were 86 collisions, down from 99 in 2009.

Manx Police attributed the drop to its road safety campaign and efforts by partner agencies.

The Department of Infrastructure said the fall was particularly pleasing given the number of bikers visiting the island had increased by 5%, from 9,900 to 10,150 this year.

During TT 2010, police issued 148 roadside cautions for a combination of offences, mainly speeding and the manner of riding.

A total of 299 people were reported for offences varying from speeding and crossing double white lines to failing to wear a seatbelt and riding or driving without due care and attention.

Chief Constable Mike Langdon said: "We don't want to spoil anyone's fun and have adopted a policing style to enhance community safety during the TT by targeting the areas of highest risk, such as inappropriate riding and speeding, while encouraging police officers to engage with people enjoying the festivities."
