Jamal Musiala provides update after collapsing again in Bayern Munich friendly

Jamal Musiala has revealed he has been diagnosed with ‘easily treatable absence seizures’ after collapsing in each of Bayern Munich’s last two pre-season matches.

There was an uncomfortable feeling of deja-vu as Musiala took a turn for the worse before falling to the floor against Heidenheim this evening, just as he had done during Bayern’s friendly with RB Leipzig only three days earlier.

Fans and team-mates were stunned into silence as Jonathan Tah and Harry Kane immediately rushed to a disorientated Musiala, helping to gently lay the forward on the ground.

Musiala had been introduced just moments earlier, coming off the bench in place of Ismael Saibari at Heidenheim’s Voith-Arena.

Both sets of players were swiftly alerted to potential seriousness of the situation and joined to form a ring around Musiala to shield the Germany international from the view of cameras.

Chants of ‘Jamal Musiala’ soon rang out around the stadium as Musiala received treatment on the field and the 23-year-old was eventually able to make his way off the pitch.

At first, Musiala appeared to head towards the substitutes bench but accompanied by two members of Bayern’s staff, the attacker made a beeline for the tunnel, with Cassiano Kiala sent on in his place.

‘Jamal will speak about this in the foreseeable future,’ Bayern’s director of sport Max Eberl told reporters when asked for an update on Musiala’s condition.

‘We knew and still know about the situation… Jamal will speak out.

Before long, Musiala took to Instagram to deliver an update of his own, telling his followers he was ‘very optimistic’ about the future and reassuring fans that there were ‘no further health risks’.

He wrote: ‘First things first – I’m doing well! I’m especially grateful for your messages and support!

‘I understand that many of you are worried. I’d like to alleviate those concerns today and explain something: I’ve been diagnosed with temporary, brief, but easily treatable absence seizures, which are due to a neurological dysfunction.

‘These can lead to the recent episodes, like the one against Leipzig or now in Heidenheim.

‘I know they seem scary at first glance – but for me, they’re currently just part of my everyday life. I’m receiving excellent medical treatment and I’m very optimistic.’

The statement from Musiala continued: ‘FC Bayern and my family and friends are always by my side and supporting me on this journey. Importantly, there are no further health risks.

‘In close consultation and regular communication with the experts, it was my personal wish to face this challenge and, with the clearance from the neurologists, to continue focusing on what helps me most in my recovery: simply living my daily life and pursuing my passion for playing football. I’ve taken responsibility for that.

‘Overall, I have a very good feeling and I’m on the right track. What helps me most on this path is continuing to chase victories and titles with my team and your amazing support.

‘I hope you can understand me better now. At the same time, I ask for your understanding that I would like to keep this matter within my closest circle of confidants, the club, and the experts. Thank you so much, J [love heart emoji].’

Saturday’s equally distressing episode versus RB Leipzig arrived after Musiala had scored the third goal in a 3-1 victory for Bayern, the reigning German champions.

Musiala appeared dizzy while making a series of irregular hand movements and had to be caught by Bayern team-mate Saibari as he began to look increasingly unsteady on his feet.

After treating Musiala, Bayern’s medical team moved to reassure Vincent Kompany and his staff that nothing serious had occurred.

‘It will become clear what it was. But of course we are keeping our fingers crossed,’ Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said after Musiala’s collapse on that occasion.

But the latest incident has only intensified concerns over the forward’s health, while raising doubts over his involvement in Bayern’s German Super Cup showdown with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday.

Kompany’s men kick off their Bundesliga title defence at home to VfB Stuttgart six days later in front of a home crowd at Allianz Arena.
