Jeremy Vine steps down from presenting role after furious backlash
Jeremy Vine issued an emotional statement after sparking backlash following the announcement of a new role away from his Channel 5 panel show. The TV presenter found himself in hot water after being unveiled as the host of the Carers UK Awards, an event that seeks to "shine a spotlight" on the contributions of unpaid carers. However, the 61-year-old's addition to the celebration was slammed due to his talk show, in which critics claim he intentionally asks "provocative questions," allowing celebrity guest panellists to "spread misinformation" and "stoke hatred against disabled people".
Others claimed Jeremy was a poor choice because his platform spreads "unchecked lies" about those on benefits, and encourages "debates" around disabled people. After Carers UK announced it was "delighted" that the broadcaster would be leading the upcoming event on X, the post, which was viewed more than 69,000 times, was met with fury, forcing Jeremy to step down.

Announcing his resignation as host, Jeremy wrote: "Because I host debates about welfare, benefits etc I see I was a controversial choice to be the (obviously unpaid) host of the prestigious @CarersUK awards so I'm very happy to stand aside and give someone else the honour of doing it.
"I originally said yes to support a friend who watched her husband die in a long and painful process, and I didn't want to let her down. I see her as a heroine."
He continued: "I'm not a campaigner, and guests on my shows know I have to be impartial, but I'm very much aware of the vital role unpaid carers play. I believe we've only ever covered them sympathetically."
Concluding his emotional post, Jeremy added: "I wish @CarersUK well with their excellent event and will cheer the winners from a distance."

The presenter continued to address critics in the comments, as one hit back: " Bulls**t! You know full well, Mr Vine, that having the relentless 'should we cut benefits' discussions over and over and over again just feeds into the negative narrative, bile & hatred whipped up against vulnerable disabled people?"
Jeremy responded: "I hear you. But I work under production, and we are constantly challenged by the notion that if we don't stop adding to the £3tn standing debt, our children will be overtaxed for the whole of their lives."
As another wrote: "You aren’t impartial. You rage-bait taxpayers to think disabled people are the problem for the country's situation; we are easy targets. Shame on you. Sad for your friend, but you aren’t the person to host a show like that. You’ve caused us, disabled people, unnecessary suffering."
The Channel 5 star said: "That's fine to say. But your argument basically suggests that no one you disagree with should ever be allowed on air, and I can't go with that."
