The US President told reporters: ‘He’s a very nice man. Sort of a friend of mine. I mean, he was not good to us with NATO… he said we can’t use the island… but I wish him well.’

Andy Burnham is looking to be crowned the next Prime Minister after nobody rose to challenge him when Sir Keir Starmer quit.

The current PM set out a timetable for his resignation on the steps of Downing Street this morning in an emotional speech to the nation.

He said he had accepted ‘with good grace’ that his party no longer wanted him in charge.

Amid a wave of tributes, Burnham confirmed he would put himself forward to replace Sir Keir as part of an ‘orderly and responsible’ transition.

Moments later, Wes Streeting – seen as a leadership contender – said he thought the newly elected MP was the right man to ‘deliver the change our Party and our country needs’.

Lady Starmer thanked Downing Street staff at drinks in the No 10 garden on Monday evening, telling them she was ‘personally really grateful’ for their support.

Sir Keir Starmer’s wife Victoria said: ‘I just wanted to say thank you from me.

‘I obviously love Keir and support him as much as I can, but there’s only so much I could do, and it’s you guys who gave that support day in, day out, and I am personally really grateful for that. So, thank you all.’
