Labour regains control of Bradford Council

Labour has taken back control of Bradford Council from the Conservatives, after a decade in opposition.

Ian Greenwood is the council's new leader at the head of a minority administration, as Labour was seven seats short of gaining full control.

Liberal Democrats abstained from voting, which left the Conservatives unable to mount a challenge.

Labour emerged as the largest party on the council following the elections.

The party has 39 seats while the Conservatives have 32 and the Lib Dems 14.

Mr Greenwood told BBC News: "Obviously we'd rather have won the majority of seats and had overall control.

"But in the absence of that my view is that the largest single group, the group that won some seats, the group that had the largest single vote in the district had an obligation to stand up for the leadership and hope that other groups will support that."

Mr Greenwood said Labour wanted to "move the district forward and deal with the difficult issues we face."
