Large grass fire on Tonypandy mountain extinguished

Firefighters have managed to extinguish a mountain fire in Tonypandy which was burning for over a day.

Crews were first called on Saturday night but said they could not tackle the grass fire because it was on a steep cliff face.

However by early Monday morning the fire had died back and they were able to use two jets and firefighters with beaters to put it out.

A fire service spokeswoman confirmed the fire was extinguished by 0230 BST.

On Sunday, the the fire service has had over 20 calls about the fire, which was near Edmoundstown Road.

Steve Doel, Tonypandy fire station manager, said at the time there was no immediate danger of the fire spreading to property.

Crews from Porth and Tonypandy were at the scene at various times throughout the day, along with a 4x4 vehicle.

They were first called at 2200 BST on Saturday, then went back to the scene at 0850 BST on Sunday and again on Sunday afternoon and midnight.
