Last night in Chicago, history was made when 87-year-old Japanese conductor Takashi Asahina, music director of the Osaka Philharmonic, made his American orchestral debut with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in a performance of Anton Bruckner's Symphony No. 5, an hour-and-a-quarter's worth of conducting that would tax a man half Asahina's age. Judy Kampfner reports from Chicago on Asahina's debut after a lifetime of conducting orchestras in Japan, Berlin, Munich and Dresden.
