Leicestershire drivers urged to insure vehicles

Motorists in Leicestershire are being warned of the penalties of driving without insurance in a new campaign.

The scheme, Get Covered, aims to lower the number of uninsured drivers on the county's roads.

In 2009 more than 2,600 cars were taken off the road by Leicestershire police after drivers were discovered without insurance, a licence or both.

Magistrates and police have now joined together to hand out advice and information to motorists.

Driving without insurance can result in a £5,000 fine, disqualification and a criminal record.

Roger Corlett from the Leicestershire Magistrates' Association said the campaign was about education.

He added: "The deterrents are already in place."
