Life term for man who killed wife

A man has been jailed for life for murdering the woman he had married for the second time.

George Clark stabbed 44-year-old Sharlene Clark four times at a house in Kilmarnock, which he also shared with another woman who had been his wife.

The 53-year-old had claimed he was acting in self defence during the incident in October.

At the High Court in Glasgow, temporary judge Michael O'Grady QC ordered Clark to serve at least 14 years in prison.

The court heard how the couple first married in 1982 but later divorced.

They then remarried on 11 March 2009, after getting together when they both returned to the Kilmarnock area.

Clark moved the victim into the home he shared with his second wife Helen, 58, from whom he was divorced.

However, the relationship was volatile and Clark was described as being jealous of his wife's friendship with her former lover, while she feared he was going to return to his second wife.

After a series of rows, and spending time apart, Mrs Clark returned to the house on 12 October last year - the night she was killed.

The court heard that before her return, Clark also texted a death threat to his wife.

During another row on his wife's return, Clark stabbed her three times in the chest and once on the neck.

As she lay dying he dialled 999 and told an operator: "I've just stabbed my wife. Would you please get an ambulance. She's not breathing, hurry up."

He later claimed Mrs Clark had attacked him and he acted in self defence but this was rejected by a jury.

Jailing him for life, judge O'Grady told Clark: "You have taken the life of your own wife. A woman who had a lot to live for."
