Lincolnshire fatal crash drunk driver jailed

A Lincolnshire man who caused a fatal road accident while drunkenly racing a friend has been jailed for seven years.

Christopher Jones, of Rowan Road, Waddington, was on the wrong side of a road near Spalding when the accident happened in July 2009.

Lincoln Crown Court heard Jones's car was doing 75mph when it hit the vehicle carrying Ukrainian Raisa Revina, 69.

Jones, 32, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

He was also banned from driving for five years.

Two of Ms Revina's friends, who she had been visiting on holiday, were also badly injured in the crash.

The court heard Jones and Matthew Cheavins had been drinking all day in Spalding and decided to race each other back.

Cheavins, 29, of High Street, Lincoln, admitted dangerous driving and perverting the course of justice.

He was jailed for 27 months and banned from driving for three years.

PC Mark Brown, from Lincolnshire Police, said the men were thoughtless and dangerous.

"These two had not thought about others for a moment - they had even been texting their girlfriends bragging they are drunk at some point.

"They had not given any consideration to other road users at all and it is infuriating.

"Christopher Jones was three times over the legal drink driving limit at the time of the accident and it just shows he has no consideration for others."
