A bus has been damaged following two attacks by masked youths on the outskirts of Londonderry.

The first incident was reported to police at about 01:50 BST on Sunday.

Police said there had been an altercation on the Translink bus before it reached the Drumahoe park and ride.

They said up to 15 youths wearing face coverings attacked the bus, smashing one window and damaging another.

The police said that the bus driver continued to Altnagelvin Hospital "as a precaution to ensure no passengers had been injured".

However, as the bus passed the Ivy Mead area, police say a second group of approximately six people, also wearing face coverings, attempted to attack the vehicle.

Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesperson for Translink confirmed a 212 Goldliner coach travelling from Belfast towards Foyle Street Bus centre was attacked by a group of youths at Drumahoe park and ride in the early hours of Sunday, resulting in a number of broken windows.

"The driver stopped at Altnagelvin to allow a passenger to be checked for an injury at the nearby hospital," they said.

"The safety of our staff and passengers is our top priority and we completely condemn this attack.

"We are assisting PSNI with their investigation into this incident."
