A man and four children suffered serious burns after a lorry exploded near a country pub.

Five people were seriously injured in the explosion outside the Hare and Hounds Inn in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, yesterday afternoon.

Alarm was raised at about 2.17pm yesterday after reports of the sudden explosion, with the victims trapped inside the vehicle.

All five were taken to the hospital, where the injuries of the man and one of the children were found to be life-threatening.

Three other kids suffered life-changing burns in the sudden explosion.

Footage from the scene appears to show the charred wreckage of a tipper truck, with the cab destroyed by the flames.

The front of the truck where the engine was appears to have been gutted.

An investigation has been launched, although the police believe there are no suspicious circumstances.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire Police said: ‘Emergency services attended and found that five people in the vehicle, four children and a man, had suffered serious burns. All of them were taken to hospital for treatment.

The man’s injuries are believed to be life-threatening, as are one of the children’s.

‘The other children have injuries which are believed to be life-changing.

A spokesperson for the Yorkshire Ambulance Service told Metro: ‘We received an emergency call at 2.11pm yesterday (Sunday) to report an explosion in a vehicle on Liley Lane in Mirfield.

A number of ambulance resources were dispatched to the scene, including four ambulances and the air ambulance, and five patients were conveyed to hospital.
