A man has been arrested after a bag containing suspected firearms and ammunition prompted a security alert in Torquay.

The bag was spotted near the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, above Oddicombe beach, on Tuesday afternoon.

Police cleared part of the beach, creating a 100m (330ft) exclusion zone around the bag. Bomb disposal experts made the contents safe on site.

The 27-year-old man was later released on bail.

The bag was a few feet from a cliff edge and about 10m (33ft) away from the cliff railway when it was discovered at about 1300 BST on Tuesday.

Police said two weapons, including a suspected homemade firearm, were in the bag. One was described as "ready to fire".

Royal Navy bomb disposal officers from Plymouth made the contents safe without having to use a controlled explosion and the bag was taken to Torquay Police Station. Police left the scene at about 1730 BST.

Forensics experts are continuing their examination of the bag's contents.

The man, arrested for possessions of a firearm and ammunition without a certificate, was bailed to report back to Torquay Police Station in August.
