A 24-year-old man has been arrested following an attack in a Leicestershire pub after a World Cup game, which left a woman needing hospital treatment.

The incident happened at about 2200 BST on 12 June at the Royal Oak pub on Leicester Road, Wigston.

Police said an altercation started between two groups of men.

One of the men threw a glass which hit a 22-year-old woman on her forehead. She was treated for a cut to the head at Leicester Royal Infirmary.

The 24-year-old man has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.

Det Con Lindsay O'Nion said: "Lots of people ventured to their local pubs to watch England's first match of the World Cup, so if you live in the Wigston area and watched the game in the Royal Oak you may have seen what happened.

"Although we have someone arrested in connection with the incident we are still looking for more information about the assault."
