A man is in a critical condition after he was assaulted outside a Leeds pub following England's first World Cup match on Saturday.

The 44-year-old, from the West Park area of the city, was punched to the ground by another man outside The Skyrack in Headingley.

He suffered serious head injuries in the incident, at 2230 BST, and was taken to Leeds General Infirmary.

West Yorkshire police have urged witnesses to come forward.

Det Supt Paul Taylor said: "The victim is in a very serious condition in hospital and we are obviously extremely concerned about him."

Mr Taylor said the area outside the pub had been "absolutely packed" at the time with people who had been out to watch the England match.

"I am convinced there will be a lot of people who will have seen what happened and I urge them to contact us with any information," he said.

"I am also making a direct appeal to the person responsible for the assault or anyone who may have been with him at the time.

"Now is the opportunity for you to come forward and tell us your side of things."
