Manchester City have opened talks with Real Madrid over a deal for Eduardo Camavinga, according to reports in Spain.

City, who appointed Enzo Maresca as Pep Guardiola’s successor this week, have already agreed a deal with Nottingham Forest to sign Elliot Anderson for a club record £116 million but are in the market for another central midfielder.

Camavinga, meanwhile, has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons and was left out of France’s World Cup squad this summer after starting just 16 games in La Liga last term.

Last week, reports in Spain claimed that Manchester United and Chelsea had both been in contact with Madrid to discuss a potential deal for Camavinga.

But according to Marca, City have now been offered the chance to sign Camavinga and the two clubs are in talks over a move for the versatile French midfielder.

The report adds that Jose Mourinho, who returned to Madrid last month for a second stint as head coach, has already approved the decision to sell the 23-year-old.

Madrid are open to selling one midfielder this summer in order to finance Mourinho’s squad rebuild.

Manchester United have Aurelien Tchouameni on their shortlist and it’s understood that Madrid are also open to selling the France international.

Madrid, meanwhile, are said to be demanding a €60m (£51.4m) transfer fee for Camavinga, who they signed from French side Rennes for €40m (£34.4m) five years ago.

However, Spanish radio station Cadena SER reported that Camavinga had no intention of leaving Madrid this summer and the Spanish club would find it difficult to force the midfielder to leave.

‘There are players with valid contracts who aren’t going to leave the team,’ Cadena SER broadcaster Anton Meana said in April.

‘Camavinga’s entourage, his direct, professional entourage, those who handle his affairs, tell you it’s the same old noise. They tell us that Eduardo neither wants to leave nor will he, that he has a contract and that he’s going to stay, that in August, when the league starts, Camavinga will still be in Madrid.

‘And this is happening with 90 per cent of the squad. It’s a difficult time to change the team knowing that you can only touch two or three players, no more.’
