Man drowns while swimming in Loch Lubnaig

A 20-year-old man has died after attempting to swim across a loch in Stirlingshire.

Ross Nelson, from Falkirk, was swimming with friends when the incident happened at about 1940 BST on Sunday at Loch Lubnaig near Callander.

Emergency services, including the fire service, coastguard and Royal Navy, were involved in the search.

The man's body has been recovered from the loch and his family have been informed of his death.

Central Scotland Fire and Rescue Service said three appliances had been sent from Doune, Callendar and Stirling.

A rescue boat from Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service was also used in an attempt to rescue the man.

A fire service spokeswoman said: "This was a multi-agency rescue effort involving a number of emergency services including Central Scotland Police, the Royal Navy and coastguard.

"Unfortunately the man was located at the scene and pronounced dead."

Following the death, Central Scotland Police warned people to be wary of swimming in rivers or lochs because of the dangers of underwater currents and unknown obstacles.

On Saturday, 13-year-old Declan Shanley drowned while trying to save his friend who had got into difficulty in the River Kelvin in Glasgow.

He had gone to the aid of a friend who had strayed into deep water, but the girl made it back to the riverbank.
