Man guilty of second attack on Polish man in Aberdeen

A man jailed for an attack on a Polish man in Aberdeen has been found guilty of the attempted murder of a Polish prison inmate while in custody.

Keith Porter, 22, was jailed for nine years and four months in December for the "brutal" attack on Jaroslaw Janeczek with a wooden mop handle.

Porter then went on trial earlier this month accused of a racially-aggravated assault in Aberdeen's Craiginches.

A High Court in Inverness jury found him guilty. Sentence was deferred.

Cleaner Mr Janeczek, 39, suffered serious internal injuries in the original attack in Alexander Drive, Aberdeen, last July.

His life was saved by the efforts of surgeons.

Porter admitted attempted murder on that occasion. An accusation that the attack on Mr Janeczek was racially-motivated was deleted from the charge.

Porter carried out the second attack while awaiting sentence.

He was found guilty, after a six-day trial, of hitting 28-year-old Daniel Kaizer over the head with a 10kg weightlifting bar in the gym of Craiginches in a racially-aggravated attack.

Advocate depute Andrew Bowen told Lord Woolman of Porter's history of previous convictions, which included a racially-motivated assault in 2005.

The judge told Porter: "It is extremely troubling that you have been convicted on a second charge of attempted murder in such a short period.

"It is entirely appropriate that a risk assessment should be sought before deciding what the proper disposal should be."

Sentence was deferred until 1 September at the High Court in Edinburgh.

Co-accused George Stewart admitted assault to severe injury in the first attack and was jailed for three years and three months.

Stewart then attacked another Polish inmate in the prison gym. He was convicted of assault.

Lord Woolman told Stewart it was a minor assault which would not normally have come to the High Court and fined him £250.
