A man has been hit by a police car following an attempted raid on a jewellers in Chichester.

The man was one of three people arrested after the incident at Austins Jewellers, in North Street, on Thursday morning, Sussex Police said.

He was taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital by Surrey Air Ambulance with injuries that were not thought to be life-threatening.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) has been notified.

Police said the three men got into a van which was pursued by police and was stopped in Roman Way, Billingshurst, 45 minutes later.

A statement from Sussex Police said: "As he left the van one of the men collided with a police car coming to a stop behind it."

The statement added: "The contact between the man and the police car has been notified to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as standard procedure.

"They have asked Sussex Police to continue with inquiries into that incident whilst further information about the man's injuries is awaited."

Officers said the attempted robbery took place just before 1000 BST.

Three men wearing hoods and reported to be carrying a mallet and a nail gun tried to smash their way into the jewellers.

Police said an alarm was activated and the men fled empty-handed, chased by members of the public and two police officers who had been on their way to a court hearing at the time.

The three men were then seen to get into a nearby van.

Three arrests were made after the van was stopped and two men are being held in custody.
