A 20-year-old man is in a serious condition in hospital after he was stabbed in west Belfast.

The man was found slumped on the ground by a number of people in the Shaw's Road area at 0315 BST on Saturday.

Police said he had suffered four stab wounds to the stomach.

He was taken to the Royal Victoria Hospital where his condition is described as serious but stable.

Sinn Fein councillor Gerard O'Neill said it happened in an area where some young people were known to congregate and drink.

"This has left a family completely devastated today, left with many, many questions, not knowing what the future holds for them," he said.

"I would appeal to anyone who has any information about this incident to bring it forward."
