A man has suffered facial injuries after being attacked in what police say was an apparently unprovoked attack in Merthyr Tydfil.

The 42-year-old is in a stable condition at Prince Charles Hospital after the incident at Garden City in Penydarren at 1220 BST on Saturday.

South Wales Police said he was walking through the area beforehand and repeatedly kicked in the face.

The suspect is described as in his mid 20s, white, and of slim build.

He had short, light coloured hair, is about 6ft tall (1.8m) and he was wearing a white or pale blue T-shirt and jeans.

Officers said he was with a woman, who was white, in her early 20s and 5ft 6in (1.68m) to 5ft 8in (1.73m) tall.

She had dark shoulder length hair and was wearing a denim jacket and dark trousers.

Acting Det Insp of Merthyr CID, Paul Latham, said: "This would appear to be an unprovoked attack which saw the victim repeatedly kicked which has left him with facial fractures.

"I am appealing to anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the Garden City area of Penydarren at around 12.20am on Saturday or anyone who may have information regarding this crime to come forward."

Anyone with information should contact South Wales Police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
