A man has died in an industrial incident at a Sheffield steelworks.

Police and fire officers were called to the incident at Forgemasters, on Brightside Lane, at 2310 BST on Wednesday.

The man, who was in his 20s but has not been named, was taken to the city's Northern General Hospital, where he died in the early hours.

A joint investigation has been started by the Health and Safety Executive and South Yorkshire Police.

Graham Honeyman, chief executive at Sheffield Forgemasters, said: "During routine work in the evening of 16 June, a Forgemasters employee was taken to the Northern General Hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

"Our thoughts are with the man's family, who have been informed."

The incident comes as expansion plans by the factory have been halted after the government cancelled an £80m loan.
