The deputy first minister has spoken of his "shock and sadness" over the death of a teenager in Londonderry at the weekend.

Padraig Barton, who was an 18-year-old student, died in hospital after he was hit by a car on the Letterkenny Road at about 0130 BST on Sunday.

Mr Barton was a pedestrian and was hit by the car near Nixon's Corner.

Mr McGuinness said he was well known in Derry for his work with Ogra Shinn Fein, the youth wing of Sinn Fein.

"I have known and respected the Barton and Keenan families for many years and they have played a very influential part in the life of the community and republican politics in Derry," said Mr McGuinness.

"Padraig, even though young in years, made his unique contribution through his involvement with republican youth groups in the city."

Mr Barton was taken to hospital following the accident, but died later on Monday evening.
