Mastercard compensation: How 47 million Britons could claim at least £45 under £100m settlement

Millions of British consumers are set to receive compensation after a landmark Mastercard settlement worth at least £100million cleared its final legal hurdle.

Up to 47 million people could qualify for payouts of between £45 and £70, even if they have never owned a Mastercard.

Walter Merricks, the former financial ombudsman leading the case, confirmed this week that the remaining legal challenges have been withdrawn, removing the final obstacle to distributing compensation.

The settlement follows a landmark court victory secured last year.

Mr Merricks said the resolution “finally opens the way for me to prepare for distribution of at least £100m to consumers.”

The claims process is expected to open before the end of the year.

Mr Merricks first launched the legal action in 2016, alleging that millions of shoppers were charged unfair fees on transactions over a 16‑year period between May 1992 and June 2008.

The case argued that consumers paid higher prices because of the fees, regardless of how they chose to pay.

“Most people who are now over 34 and who shopped in supermarkets between May 1992 and June 2008 will be eligible to claim, regardless of whether they ever had a Mastercard,” Mr Merricks said.

The scheme has been delayed for years due to legal disputes, but those challenges have now been resolved.

Consumers will have six months to register once the scheme opens later this year, with final payment amounts confirmed early next year.

The £100million fund will be shared equally among successful claimants.

Consumers will be able to choose between receiving the money directly into a bank account or as an emailed gift voucher.

Mr Merricks said he is also exploring an option allowing claimants to donate their compensation to national charities.

Anyone aged over 34 who shopped in supermarkets between May 1992 and June 2008 is expected to be eligible, regardless of whether they ever held a Mastercard.

Further details on how to register are expected before the end of 2026.
