"Masters of the Universe," the big-screen reboot starring Nicholas Galtizine as He-Man and Jared Leto as Skeletor, is set for streaming video on demand (SVOD) premiere on Prime Video on July 22. The Amazon MGM Studios production, which premiered in theaters on June 5, faced a difficult box office run, grossing just $113 million worldwide against its $200 million budget. This streaming release, occurring 47 days after its theatrical opening, bypasses the anticipated premium video on demand (PVOD) strategy. Instead, it follows Amazon MGM's typical 40-50 day theatrical-to-streaming window, a consistent approach for the studio despite the film's high cost and underperformance. The movie, also featuring Idris Elba and Camila Mendes, remains in limited theatrical release.

Masters of the Universe, the big-screen reboot of the Mattel toy-turned-media franchise, is set to make its streaming debut on Prime Video this week instead of premium video on demand.

Directed by Travis Knight and starring Nicholas Galtizine as He-Man and Jared Leto as his nemesis Skeletor, Masters of the Universe opened in theaters on June 5. A He-Man origin story, Masters of the Universe also stars Idris Elba as Man-at-Arms Duncan, Camila Mendes as Teela, James Purefoy as King Randor, Charlotte Riley as Queen Marlena, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn and Morena Baccarin as The Sorceress.

An Amazon MGM Studios production, Masters of the Universe had a difficult run in theaters, beginning with its opening weekend $29.4 million from 3,667 North American theaters on June 5-7. The film took a catastrophic dive in its second weekend in theaters, when it earned only $8.9 million domestically — a 70% drop in domestic ticket sales from its opening frame.

Nearing the end of its theatrical run, Masters of the Universe has earned $64.6 million domestically and $48.7 million internationally for a worldwide box office tally of $113 million to date. Masters of the Universe, per Variety, had about a $200 million production budget before marketing costs.

Instead of following Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary’s lead and making its debut in the home entertainment marketplace on digital streaming via premium video on demand, Masters of the Universe is instead heading to a streaming video on demand premiere on Wednesday, July 22, on Prime Video, according to a new listing on the streaming platform.

Prime Video, of course, is Amazon’s streaming platform that is included in an Amazon Prime membership that costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year. In addition, subscribers can opt for a Prime Video-only membership for $8.99 per month. Since Prime Video is an ad-based platform, a Prime Video Ultra ad-on, which delivers streaming ad-free, is available for $4.99 a month.

With a product budget akin to Project Hail Mary — the Ryan Gosling sci-fi blockbuster cost $200 million before its marketing spend, according to Puck News — it seemed that the most logical route for Masters of the Universe in the home entertainment space was PVOD to recoup the film’s enormous cost.

After all, when Project Hail Mary arrived on PVOD, it cost $24.99 to purchase on digital and $19.99 to rent, which opened up another revenue stream for the film before it headed to SVOD on MGM+ and Prime Video a few weeks later.

Instead, Masters of the Universe is following Amazon MGM Studios’ 40- to 50-day theatrical window model like many of its previous feature film releases. For example, the Ben Affleck crime thriller Accountant 2 opened in theaters on April 25, 2025, and made its debut on Prime Video 41 days later on June 5, 2025.

In 2026, the Chris Hemsworth and Halle Berry Amazon MGM Studios action thriller Crime 101 premiered in theaters on Feb. 13 before it arrived on Prime Video 47 days later, on April 1. More recently, the Hugh Jackman family comedy The Sheep Detectives arrived on Prime Video on June 24, 47 days after its theatrical release on May 8.

Masters of the Universe’s July 22 release on Prime Video comes 47 days after its June 5 theatrical release. Rated PG-13, Masters of the Universe is still playing in 315 theaters nationwide.
