"Minions & Monsters," the eighth film in the "Despicable Me" franchise, opens nationwide on July 1st, getting a jump on the 4th of July weekend. Early reviews on Rotten Tomatoes are overwhelmingly positive, with all 14 critics deeming it "fresh." Directed by Pierre Coffin, the PG-rated movie is set in the 1920s, detailing how the Minions conquered Hollywood, lost their fame, and then unleashed monsters to save the world. Critics like Guy Lodge praised its "madly moviosa" entertainment, while Drew Thomas called it potentially the "best in the franchise." John Nugent noted it's "more of the same" but will please fans. The film features a star-studded voice cast including Allison Janney, Jeff Bridges and George Lucas.

Minions & Monsters, the eighth film in the blockbuster Despicable Me franchise, is winning over Rotten Tomatoes critics in early reviews.

Directed by Pierre Coffin, Minions & Monsters gets a jump on the 4th of July weekend when it opens in theaters nationwide on Wednesday, July 1.

Billed as “the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood.” Set in the 1920s, the film shows how Gru’s yellow, pill-shaped henchmen became movie stars, but lost everything. In an effort to get back on the map, the Minions unleash monsters upon the planet so they can save the world from the creatures they have created.

Coffin once again voices the Minions in Minions & Monsters, which also stars the voices of Allison Janney, Jeff Bridges, Jesse Eisenberg, Trey Parker, Bobby Moynihan, Phil LaMarr, Zoey Deutsch, Christoph Waltz and George Lucas.

While Rotten Tomatoes has not yet assigned a critics’ score to Minions & Monsters, all 14 reviews posted on the review aggregation site to date are “fresh.” Along with the Tomatometer score, RT’s Critics Consensus, Audience Summary and Popcornmeter score based on verified user ratings are still pending.

Note: The RT Tomatometer score, as well as additional reviews, will be added to this article once the information becomes available.

Guy Lodge of Variety is among the top critics on RT who gives Minions & Monsters a “fresh” score, writing, “The film is such a weird, willful popular entertainment for much of its running time that it holds your goodwill: It's almost bellissima but it's fully, madly moviosa, and that's more than the [eighth] entry in any animated franchise has a right to be.

Drew Thomas of The Wrap also gives the film a “fresh” score on RT, writing, Minions & Monsters builds to an open-hearted tribute to the power of the communal moviegoing experience that is unexpectedly emotional and makes the film feel like it could be the best in the franchise, perhaps since the very first Despicable Me.”

John Nugent of Empire Magazine also gives Minions & Monsters a “fresh” score, but with some reservations. Nugent writes in his RT review summary that the film is “more of the same from this franchise, really. It will keep the Minion-sized people in your life happy and probably make a bazillion dollars. Bananas all round!”

Jake Wilson of the Sydney Morning Herald also deems the film “fresh” on RT, writing, “The somewhat disjointed quality of Minions & Monsters is fitting provided we take it as a fantasy conceived by the Minions themselves.”

Rated PG, Minions & Monsters opens in theaters nationwide on July 1.
