Morecambe beach fails annual quality test

Morecambe South failed the annual Good Beach Guide water quality test by the Marine Conservation Society (MCS).

In 2009, Morecambe held the Quality Coast Award.

421 of the UK's 769 bathing beaches were recommended for excellent water quality in the latest assessment.

The number of UK bathing beaches recommended for excellent water quality improved from 388 in 2009 to 421 this year.

The number of UK bathing beach failures dropped to 41 this year, down from 66 last year.

The latest bathing water tests were conducted from May to September 2009.

Morecambe South cannot apply for the Quality Coast Award in the current year because it failed the water quality test.

Cleveleys and Bispham both passed the water quality test this year, after both failing last year.

The MCS said the poor water quality is likely to be a result of heavy rainfall overloading sewage systems and washing fertiliser and pollutants onto beaches.

The result of the test means the resort cannot apply for the Quality Coast Award, which it held in 2009.

Lancashire's other beaches have passed the test, including Cleveleys and Bispham, which both failed last year.
