Morrisons has confirmed the closure date for a store in York shuttering as part of a wider campaign of closures. A website run by Liberal Democrat councillors in the Dringhouses and Woodthorpe ward of the city confirmed the Morrisons Daily store on Moorcroft Road in Woodthorpe will pull down the shutters for good on August 1.

The branch also contains a Post Office counter, which will also close. Morrisons, which has more than 2,200 stores across the UK, recently revealed plans to close dozens of Morrisons Daily branches. The retailer said the store closures, which were originally taken on as part of a £190million rescue deal for McColl’s in 2022, were subject to ongoing review but had been loss-making for some time despite efforts to improve trading. The high street giant said their circumstances had been exacerbated by "significant cost increases resulting from Government policy choices", including the national living wage increases and the hike in employer National Insurance contributions.

Employees affected by the closures may get alternative roles, a spokesperson from Morrisons said.

The chain stressed that the move affected company-owned stores, but not its franchised stores - a part of the business that's continuing to expand, as per The York Press.

The 100 or so store closures have been revealed as part of a "wider strategy to improve the overall performance of the retailer’s convenience store network", the retailer said.

The branch in Woodthorpe was previously confirmed to be among the stores set to leave the high street forever. A Morrisons representative has since confirmed the closure date for the branch in an email to Lib Dem councillor Stephen Fenton, saying: “We have carefully considered all comments and suggestions received during the consultation period. Unfortunately, there are no viable options to achieve even a break even position and the store will close on 01 August 2026.

"Prior to closure, notices will be displayed in the store to inform customers of the closure date, and to advise them of their nearest Post Office branch.

"Please be assured that we continue to support all those impacted at the store. This includes exploring alternative roles at a nearby Morrisons Daily or Morrisons supermarket.”

The Post Office confirmed that its counter within the store would soon be serving customers for the final time too. In a statement on its website it said: “The provision of a Post Office service to our customers in the local community is important to us, and we will continue to work hard to restore services in the area.

"We are currently investigating the options available to enable us to reinstate a Post Office service to the local community, this may include the vacancy being advertised on our website www.runapostoffice.co.uk.“

According to the Lib Dem councillor's site, Cllr Stephen Fenton met with a Post Office representative earlier this month to talk about possible options for a replacement service and has got in touch with retailers in the local area about the possibility of hosting a Post Office counter.

Cllr Fenton said: “It’s disappointing that Morrisons turned down my request that the store be kept open until a new home – either temporary or permanent – can be found for the Post Office counter.

"The loss of both the Post Office and the Morrisons store is a real blow for residents who cannot easily access other shops or Post Offices. My thoughts are with the staff team at Morrisons.”
