A taste test comparing different sausages couldn’t have been done at a better time, with summer in full swing and high temperatures. Finding the right links to fire up on the grill is crucial this summer. Besides that, sausages are an essential part of quintessential British meals, including a full English, bangers and mash, toad-in-the-hole, and more.

While many might opt for more expensive meats, paying a higher price doesn’t always guarantee better quality, and in this case, the cheapest option ranked as the UK’s best. The blind taste test had 65 people compare 10 supermarket own-brand sausages against two popular brands, and while three got the superior title of “best buys” there was one that came out on top.

According to the test, Lidl’s Deluxe Pork Sausages, which cost £2.49 for a 400g pack, beat options from the likes of M&S, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons, but also big brands such as Heck, Jolly Hog and The Black Farmer.

The Deluxe sausages from the German supermarket bagged a 73% score with consumers commending their “delectable taste”, “moist consistency”, and “just right” salt levels.

However, while the delicious sausages came out on top, it is worth knowing that they are fairly high in saturated fat. Two sausages contain 11.5g, more than half the recommended daily maximum for women and more than a third for men.

Right behind Lidl were Aldi’s Specially Selected Pork Sausages, which price-matched Lidl’s. The “impressive all-rounders” option scored a 72% with consumers highlighting the “aroma”, “meaty flavour”, and “looks”.

What prevented it from taking Lidl’s place is the need for a “slightly stronger herbal kick,” according to the testers.

Morrisons also managed to bag the second spot for its The Best Thick Pork Sausages (£3.25 for 400g), which had a “classic” flavour but a “slightly coarser” texture compared to its competitors.

M&S got an average ranking, being placed 6th with 71%, followed by Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference British Pork Sausages, scoring 70%.
