Two motorcyclists were seriously hurt in a crash on the M6 in Cheshire, which has led to lengthy traffic delays.

They have been airlifted to hospital after the incident on the northbound carriageway between junction 16 and 17 near Sandbach services.

The Highways Agency, which was alerted at 1305 BST on Sunday, said it was a multi-vehicle incident with cars and motorcycles believed to be involved.

There were delays of up to 45 minutes southbound and 30 minutes northbound.

The southbound carriageway was closed between junction 17 and 16 while an air ambulance arrived and left, but it reopened at 1420 BST.

The northbound stretch between junction 16 and 17 remained closed at about 1710 BST.
