A new Bishop of Stafford has been appointed by the Queen.

The Reverend Canon Geoffrey Annas has been chosen to succeed the Right Reverend Gordon Mursell, who stood down in May for health reasons.

Mr Mursell, 61, has undergone three vocal chord operations in the past eight years and said he feared he could lose his voice unless he retired.

Mr Annas has joined the parish from St Christopher's in Thornhill, Southampton, where he was the vicar.

The Bishop of Stafford is responsible for more than 480 clergy and lay ministers across 220 churches in north and east Staffordshire within the Diocese of Lichfield.
