Between 15th February and 15th March 1964, Papua New Guinea (PNG) held it’s first election for all it’s citizens. The impact of the election would create a new political structure for the territory, shifting the old Legislative Council to the House of Assembly and was a key step towards PNG’s Independence. In order to educate people how to vote, patrol officers visit all the villages and people who have never voted before, attend polling booths. This Four Corners report looks at issues and considerations during the polling period, including a look at some of the candidates and various other people’s political views regarding PNG’s independence.
