Newark bus station site has closed for renovation

The bus station in Newark has closed as preparations are made for the construction of a new station and other facilities.

The redevelopment of the Potterdyke car park will also include a doctor's surgery, health centre, housing and 411 car parking spaces.

Buses will now wait on Castlegate, Lombard Street and the Town Wharf until the new station opens in December 2011.

Alternative car parking will be at the rear of the Potterdyke site.

More parking spaces will be made available at the Riverside Arena off Tolney Lane providing more than 200 spaces until the supermarket and car park opens.

In June 2008 campaigners in the town won their fight to prevent the bus station from being moved.

About 9,000 people signed a petition to oppose a planning application to move the facility from Lombard Street to The Wharf in Newark.

They said it would spoil the gateway into the town.

The Potterdyke Consortium, which is behind the new development, said they had decided to keep it in the same place following public consultation.
