A bus station is reopening after a resurfacing and other works with transport chiefs claiming passengers will now "enjoy a less bumpy ride".

Newcastle's Eldon Square station was closed on 10 June to enable contractors to resurface its roads as well as repaint, make changes to drainage and upgrade passenger information displays.

Newcastle City Council said the weather made the task harder because the "resurfacing materials used do not respond well to extreme heat".

Despite those difficulties, the authority said the station was on track to reopen on Monday once new road markings were added over the weekend.

The closure has seen buses use temporary stops around the city centre.

Work will shortly begin to upgrade the traffic lights and pedestrian crossings at the Gallowgate and Percy Street junction, where preliminary works have been taking place.

Temporary traffic lights will be used while the main signals are upgraded and some lane closures may be required.
