Newspaper headlines: Burnham's '10-year mission' and 'Princess in peaks condition'
Andy Burnham's "10 year mission" to "raise living standards" leads the Financial Times. In his first speech as "probable prime minister-in-waiting", he is expected to set out plans for a new "No 10 North" based in Manchester. The FT says his aim to decentralising power has "echoes of Starmer and Johnson".
"Give me 10 years to fix Britain" echoes the front page of the Daily Telegraph on Burnham's speech. Describing the former Greater Manchester Mayor as the "incoming prime minister", the paper says he will set out "his stall to boost economy through devolution".
"Tax raids on middle classes in Burnham's 10-year plan" leads the Daily Mail. It syas the "would-be PM" will unveil his "left-wing plan for a decade in power" for when Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer is "shoved aside" next month. It describes Burnham as a "messiah' without a mandate".
"Growth in all postcodes" is the message the Guardian picks out from Burnham's upcoming speech. It also points to "alarm" over the "growing role of private equity firms" in UK government spending. In the Middle East, "US and Iranian strikes threaten fragile peace".
The Times also leads with Burnham's forthcoming speech, highlighting that he is expected to say he wants "mayors to help cut benefits bill". It also reports that Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood will announce plans for the "public to decide asylum appeals" as she "jettisons judges".
Andy Burnham's expected vow to "lift Britain back up" comes with what The i Paper calls the "biggest ever power transfer." In his speech, the paper reports the Labour leadership "front-runner" will say he wants power "pushed out of Whitehall to regions and local communities".
"All hands off deck!" headlines the Metro as it says it has seen plans to "future-proof our armed forces". This "blueprint" that will be unveiled by Starmer has reportedly been signed off by "his likely successor Andy Burnham."
"Princess in peaks condition" is the Daily Star headline after Catherine, Princess of Wales, completed the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of the hospital where she was treated for cancer. Also on the front of the Star: "Come on and do the Congo" as the England team is due to face the Democratic Republic of Congo in the World Cup.
The Daily Mirror quotes the princess as describing her hikes as her "chance to give something back". It also heralds the news of England cricket captain Ben Stokes ending his international career as a "great innings".
The Sun continues the Star's call for England to "do the Congo". It marks the England cricket captain's retirement with "That's all Stokes!"
The Daily Express reports on the case of an NHS trust which defended a transgender nurse's rights to share a changing room with female nurses.
